# Global Network Initiative (GNI)

Launched in 2008, the Global Network Initiative **(**[**GNI**](https://globalnetworkinitiative.org)**)** is a multi-stakeholder initiative that helps companies respect freedom of expression and privacy rights when faced with government pressure to hand over user data, remove content, or restrict communications. For more information, see the [**GNI Principles**](https://globalnetworkinitiative.org/gni-principles/) and their Country Legal Frameworks Resource **(**[**CLFR**](https://clfr.globalnetworkinitiative.org/)**)**. GFMD became an official member of GNI in June 2019.
