The annual report is a collaborative effort by the DC-Journalism. Members of the working group were invited to submit article abstracts on the theme of AI & Journalism, with the subthemes of AI governance, AI use for content production, the impact of AI on news business models and sustainability, the risks and harms related to AI, and the platformization of AI development. The articles provide diverse and critical perspectives on the actual and anticipated effects of AI on journalism, with a cross-cutting focus on Internet governance and media viability.
The contents of the DC-Journalism annual report can provide you with evidence and inspiration to initiate dialogue with policymakers, the private sector and the technical community in the IGF system and with policy-making processes beyond the IGF, so together we can chart out actions and strategies to build and strengthen the sustainability of journalism and the news media in the service of effective public participation and strong democracies.

In bringing together diverse voices and perspectives, this report is both a microscope and a telescope—offering detailed examinations of specific issues while also zooming out to consider their broader implications for the sustainability of journalism and news media in the digital and AI era. Through the lens of data, access, and transparency, we encounter a complex, interwoven narrative requiring not only attention but also action. As we move through a time marked by rapid tech advancements and shifting political landscapes, these key issues transition from being trendy topics to critical building blocks that can either support or weaken the future of media.

This publication represents the inaugural collective effort of members of the DC-Sustainability to develop research and policy analysis that informs internet governance decision-making and impacts journalism and the news ecosystem. The articles and case studies included in this year’s report explore various facets of media sustainability challenges and opportunities in an evolving digital world and what these could imply for how we choose to govern the internet.
The contributions to this report address critical issues at the intersection of internet governance and the sustainability of news media and journalism. They are, however, merely a glimpse of the multitude of ways that these issues intersect in the digital sphere. What’s more, they all point to the need for greater engagement by the technical community and stakeholders from across the spectrum including governmental, intergovernmental, academic, and civil society and from all regions of the world. Ultimately, this is what members of this Dynamic Coalition are committed to doing. In that respect, this report represents just one effort in pursuit of that larger goal.
